Beg, borrow or steal to make a work of art from which you think you could make money.

Great product! I think it fully represents exactly what your intentions were. I like your choices for the modern parts of your pieces. Your documentation is also well written. One thing that I would suggest is reevaluating your chosen "main points" for color in the images, but it seems you have already considered that in your self critique. Good job.
I really like the quality of the final product. Although it matches Mickey Mouse's icon face, I am curious as to whether it was a deliberate choice for him to be smiling instead of matching the serious look of Andre in OBEY. Also, I think this piece may have had a stronger impression if we were closer to a time when Disney was still producing blatant propaganda. However, if you relate Mickey Mouse to the media in general, then it works. I am sure people would buy this as stickers and posters.
I really like what you did for this work. I would be interested to hear why you choose the 4 sites that you choose, and why only 4. Perhaps you could make a large array of them like Ai Wei Wei did. There were two specific things I thought may be avenues for the work: making the eyes into Mark Zuckerberg's for the FaceBook one and other respective business owners for the other ones, and then judging how people react when using these logins in a real world setting. This would be an interesting act of hacktivism.
I would consider it as an great street art if you truly did it on the walls. Your work perfectly combines Shepard's style and the delivery of the idea of propaganda. I also consider your work highly aesthetic, since I can actually feel the pressure when I stare at your work. Good job!
I actually replayed your work for 4 times. For me it is really enjoyable to listen, and the beats you've modified and added were beautiful. Manipulating sound is what I always wanna try to do, and your work definitely encouraged me to try doing sound relevant projects in the future.
I love your creativity! It is very brave of you to create something that manipulates sound effects, which we haven't covered a lot in the course. It's also great for you to use an original poem, which is beautiful together with the music.
I would suggest that you be careful with the high frequency that you included in the music. Also, you might be able to find another way to better convey the sound of gun shot and clapping. Probably incorporate more sound effects related to running.
Overall it was great!
I love your creativity! The idea of grouping logos by their colors gives a smooth color scale. The blurring effect of binary digits also creates an astounding effect.
I think overall the execution is great. However, the transition between the logos and background could use more refinement.
The documentation is pretty clear.
I found this to be a very creative and interesting project. The implementation of the image from an analog to a digital medium is almost perfect. I found the creative license that you took with the images to really show how impressive this work really is. Not only did you recreate these images in a new medium, but you completely recreated them to what you believed they would look like in a 3D environment. Well done!
This was a really awesome way to represent how much advertising has gone into our every day lives without us even knowing it. I thought the idea was really cool and the way you visually presented it with the codes was both poignant and relevant in today's society. The fact that QR codes are just everywhere in the internet, in the real world, on my cereal, suggests just how pervasive these things are without us even realizing it.
I think this project is awesome; the only critisism I would have is that this piece of art wouldn't necessarily be marketable, ironically, because it looks TOO similar to something you'd see in real life.
I like this piece very much aesthetically because I like the color scheme and the figures. However, it might be better to add in some more messages into the piece or just elaborate on the idea of skincare products. I totally understand how time consuming it is to draw your own image in a digital way, and the final product looks very good with the amount of work you put in. Like other people have said, you might want to try "stealing" next time :)
I really liked the idea of making a 3D space into a 2D image. In 3D, you can play around with depth and perception, ?75 in 2Dbyou have to carefully pick and choose what you have to highlight and take away. Your documentation is good; I really enjoyed the reflection on the difference between minimalist and simplistic. I also think you could have utilized the other objects in the original picture better, because you did a good job highlighting the one big thing, it took importance away from a lot of other things in the room.
I really like this project. I like how you interpret Bansky's pieces and use the understanding effectively to convey your own political message. The documentation is also very clear, and I also think that your second attempt was a lot better than your first one. The final product not only looks like a Bansky piece but also has your person thoughts. Reading through your thought process gives me a much better understanding of what the piece is about. My favorite part of this piece is the little child because he really evoked a strong feeling in me :)
I enjoyed the idea behind your piece because it is something close to my heart. I also like your drawing style, and while you may see flaws with it, I can find none. The only criticism I have is what someone else has already said - perhaps frame is more like a commercial or ad of some sort and play on the subtle differences in imagery between modern and classical art to create a message. Don't be afraid of "appropriating" art and trying something new with Photoshop! Other than that, I like the image, and I feel the content and composition really drive the point you had in mind home. Keep up the good work!
I love the idea behind this piece and the approach you took. Global warming is a serious issue, and your portrayal of it in such a simple yet powerful way brings attention to the urgency of it. Perhaps the only criticism I have is that with a bit more context (or background) this may be a little more powerful. Perhaps the background could be in space, while the man had taken the earth out of orbit? Either way, the style and color you chose shows the black-and-white nature of global warming: it is simple and it is happening, and it is humanity that is the cause. The coloration of the globe shows the complexity of the life and planet that it is affecting. Good job!
I like the visual aesthetic of your work and think it does a good job of emanating Andy Warhol's style. I find it interesting that in this project where we are supposed to beg, borrow, or steal, in order to make money, you focus your project on consumerism. I also think it is interesting that it is geared mostly towards the consumerism of women.
This is a very well-crafted piece with extreme re-production of Mona Lisa. This illustrates the author's intention to combine pop culture with classics and the outcome is novel and interesting. The gesture of the character from overwatch fits his personal traits and gives the audience a different perception and understanding of Mona Lisa's posture.
Optical illusions are not illusions without movements. Your project perfectly demonstrated Bridget Riley's intended effect, enabling people to experience and immerse in this visual experience without any movement of eyes. You also incorporated points and lines to form contrast of their movements. 100/10 for effort and documentation. The digitalized art represents your thoughtful work and shows your intention of combining arts with technology. Great composition!
I really like this application. It demonstrates a clear sense of appropriation to an environment where the morality of using the content itself is kind of entirely unexplored. I mean, the community behind this game has to be fairly scant nowadays, so the idea of commemorating a team that just won on a format that appeals both on a personal level and as a means of expression in a niche environment is pretty damn compelling.
I find it interesting that from your written content it seems that you immediately set off to satisfy artistic demands. Given your role as an artist yourself in this project and also your disposition towards demands as an outwardly requirement, I'm curious to find out just how literally you've taken the instructions. Despite the illusions that you're just accomplishing what the assignment says, you're ver much taking the project in a direction of your own and I am curious about the endpoint.
I think this does make an interesting point about how advertisements are just embedded in our everyday lives. I like how you really explored the monetization part of the project since a lot of companies based on the web make a large amount of money from advertising. The piece is simple but well done and looks just like a computer generated QR code. My main concern is that it does require the viewer/user to be patient enough to make their phone read multiple QR codes. Although the novelty of nested QR codes may be enough.
Parroting what others are saying here, but it should continue to be reinforced that your work actually 100% created something that allows you to experience in a novel way. It's clear effort went into this and the effect isn't lost on the casual viewer: anyone can clearly see what you've managed to do just by watching any of the gifs themselves.
Really liked your work here! This is an interesting and creative take on other previous edits of the Mona Lisa. I like your use of video game concepts in your reproductions, especially the Zenyatta one because I think his posture resembles the Mona Lisa well. I am partial to Overwatch work because I enjoy the game so much, so it was cool to see what you did with your project. Great work!
This project is really awesome. It's really clear you put a lot of thought and work into it. In my opinion, you did a really good job of translating the implied motion of these pieces into actual 3 dimensional motion. I like how you chose these specific pieces in order to focus on motion. Maybe it would've been even more interesting if you'd made the paintings more interactive. I would really love to see this presented in class regardless.
I love this project's approach and creativity toward a very modern part of popular culture. Your commentary on "Pokezombies" is an interesting, and relevant one, The Pokemon placement was clearly very well thought out as the finished product is really aesthetically pleasing, and the edits over the original work fit well. Your documentation shows you understand the source materials, and the content of your inspiration. The only thing I would have liked to read more about was how you found these Tim Burton inspired Pokemon images. Great work !
This is a very compelling project, one that leads nicely into potential use as a medium in the future. The presentation of a bunch of readable data as one larger, also readible piece of data seems like it is just begging for some sort of cool AR project.
I really like this idea. Especially, the idea of representing Augmented Reality using a painting of Magritte, a surrealist, was clever. Would you say that the surreal representation of life is a more accurate depiction of what is "real" in the world?
^Thanks for the feedback! I did this in an old game that uses low-resolution textures, so that's why the lines look fuzzy and slightly pixelated.
Wow that's pretty good! I like how it turned out. Especially the shading on the piece looks superb! The idea is pretty good, especially since Zen is a pretty fitting character for your piece.
I really liked the motivation behind this work, as it's definitely an important issue that we sometimes take for granted. Your choices for companies/websites were smart, but it's also important to note that our online activity is pretty much always being monitored. Our browsing history and shopping history dictate many of the advertisements we see, and it's alarming how much one can tell about a person by seeing their online activity.
I actually felt like the eyes you used were more playful than immediately threatening. I read it as more of a subtle warning - wide eyes curious and crazy, and definitely not completely trustworthy.
The final product turned out well, and I appreciate the documentation about which apps and programs you used to create it.
I also think it's understandable that the message of your work is very explicit, but there would be more opportunities to explore a more subtle approach to the same idea. Perhaps you could have an actual page from one of these screens open, with eyes lightly prying from the side or the back of the page.
I really liked the motivation behind your work. As someone who also got really swept up in the Pokemon Go mania as well, I saw the project as more of a critique against the fixation on our phone screens. It was cool how you chose such a tangible way to represent the craziness - the Pokemon figures, normally cute and colorful, look particularly disturbing in this setting. I also liked how they were actively taking over the human's body. Especially since the human figure was taken from a famous art piece from earlier in the 20th century, it reminded me of Ai Weiwei's concept of popular brands being placed on valuable cultural artwork.
In your critique it seemed like you wanted to add more significance to the individual portions of the work, but I recognized a lot of subtleties that you'd already included in your final work. Perhaps more could have been added to the background of the work, but it might also have taken away from the idea that "Pokezombies" are absorbed only in their own personal world.
Your art makes an interesting statement about how we, as a culture, attempt to display our emotions. I get the sense that emoticons have replaced genuine expression from looking at your artwork. I like the idea, and I believe the execution was great!
I think you did a really great job with this project. I like how used Banksy's style to creatively convey a message you're passionate about, and worked to get the piece to a point you were satisfied with. I think you gave good context about the characteristics of Banksy's style, as well as your message about the NRA. I also think the documentation of your process was clear and understandable. I think the final product came out quite well, as the visual effect is pretty startling, and your message comes across loud and clear. I also like how you can see the texture of the bricks, and that you drew the boy yourself! Great job :)
I think your project is a great borrow-steal! It incorporates the same artistic style as Shepard, but also adds new meaning due to the Micky Mouse character. I definitely was left feeling heavy and your art does a great job of promoting a sense of foreboding. Overall, great job!
I really liked your project! I thought your idea was very creative, and you executed it very well especially as you had little experience with this medium! I also think you documented your thought and working process very clearly, and showed good mastery of the technical tools you used (I really like the static-y microphone effect!). I would agree that there were a few small technical details in the track that could be fixed; places where the music cuts or when the voiceover doesn't seem to align with the music. I also think it would be nice to get a little bit more context about the poem, so that it is easier to understand what emotions you might be trying to emphasize by adding music. But overall I think you did a really wonderful job and I enjoyed listening to this!
I like your idea and I think the final result looks quite nice. It's clean and the repetition of the emoji is a very clear motif in the image. I feel like I got a good sense of your project after reading the documentation, but not as much beforehand; I think this might be because (as you have addressed) the artworks on which you've overlaid the emoji are not famous enough that everyone knows what facial expression the people were making before. In the end, seeing the originals along with your work was helpful in better understanding your intentions of the piece (which are very insightful, so nice job!).
Your theme is certainly really interesting, combining the most famous entertainment media industry Disney with a sad history of World War 2. When I saw your final work with a happy Mickey Mouse and "OBEY," I felt great gap there, which was kind of scary. However in terms of propaganda effect, I think it could have been better if you used another word instead of OBEY, since it's a pretty strong word and people might feel hostile to it and walk away. But overall, great ideas and nice final work!
You're exploring a dilemma that we're all very familiar with, the dilemma of choosing the tools to communicate our thoughts as accurately as possible. This is already a win because most of your audience can relate to your project. I think it's a very good choice here to remix emojis with portraits, as emojis emulate facial expressions. This is a very interesting project. Great job!
I love how literally you've taken the prompt. It's extremely impressive how much thought you've put into this, and also how you were actually able to steal ~$400 worth of stuff. To address the concern of the previous commenter, personally I feel like art is really dependent on the context, y'know? Can we really say that Duchamp's Fountain (or other readymade) is any more or less "artistic"? After all, it is literally just a urinal, and yet it is highly important in the art world. So I guess it's the context of the piece and the intention behind it that makes it "art." Anyway, great job! I especially enjoyed reading your documentation.
This is so very eye opening! Your idea of transforming 2d artworks into 3d animations is not only creative but also challenging to implement. I've used Blender before just for simple rendering and manipulation of 3d objects, but never thought of incorporating it into 3d animation. I look forward to seeing you present your project in class. Nice job!
I think it's very interesting that you decided to design a car of all things. You were probably the only one in the class to do that, so congratulations. The cars themselves definitely look like something I would see on the street and people would think "yep that car sure looks like it wasn't designed by some college kid but by someone who designs cars." However, the lines between colors aren't very smooth, and when I think cars, I think smooth and sleek, which your lines did not convey. It's not a perfect project, but I think you deserve to give yourself more credit than you did.
This is awesome.. I especially love the untitled-1. I never thought the pictures could actually move in this way! I can't find more words to applause the idea of introduction of 3d in the medium of 2d. I can't let my eyes off from your animation. It would be so cool if you should show these to the original artists. I hope we can see this on big screen tomorrow in class. Nice job!
I like that your project somewhat mimics Andy Warhol's works, such as Marilyn Monroe portraits, but at the same time is originated from your own idea! It looks like you put a lot of thought into creating four different personalizations of macbook, as they each have separate and distinct themes to them. I also see that you incorporated some of the styles of Andy Warhol, like inverting colors. I think this led the overall work to look much cooler! I think your work is a very creative piece that reflects some aspects of pop art and your own thoughts on personalities and personalizations.
I was greatly entertained by your amazing documentation. I really like your style of logic. I could feel the empathy to your situation. Your digital art shows how bullying companies negative emotions in the victim and the pain he is going through. The metaphor of the bully to monster was creative. Also I could recognize your effort to align the photos according to your plan. Nice job:)
I think it's strangely impressive how true to this theme you've decided to be. The fact that you stole a bunch of stuff for a project makes me feel more intrigued than anything, but it's definitely a stand-out performance from the rest of us lesser thieves. My only concern (and I hate saying this) is that I'm not sure to what extent we can call this art. It seems like your primary intentions are for the story and shock value, and not aestheticism, which is why I say this. Overall I think you have a very interesting take on this assignment that certainly stands out.
I like how this turned out! I wouldn't be too hard on yourself as for the technique of the piece, etc. Drawing to the level of Da Vinci is not a requirement for this class, haha. I find it funny how you chose the subject of the painting - I wish I could play video games as homework! I do agree though that the figure you have chosen translates well to a Renaissance style painting.
This is absolutely wonderful, especially seeing how you decided to try to work with sound although according to the description this was the first time you were experimenting with it. And it definitely works; the build in the song itself and the increasing density of words definitely helps to expand the emotional depth of the piece. Also, any nervousness you mentioned in the description did not come out within the lyrics in the song, and for a first time audio work, it is great!
However, there are a few things to point out which could be improved. First, there is a hard cut in the audio at 2:09 and 2:28 which unfortunately causes slight interruption to the emotional build. Also, for further polish consideration, you might want to consider borrowing a mic from the IDeATe lending for recording the lyrics; there is a slight popping and fuzzy distortion to the lyrics, and also as a final sidenote you might want to play with your mic's input to avoid any distortions.
Still, it is great that you took the risk to work with a medium which you are completely unfamiliar with, and I cannot wait to see if you have any other audio projects in the future!
This is a pretty interesting project that caught my eye. However I feel like it would be much more striking and on-message if more photoshops were done and, as you said, put into a larger collage. I feel like putting dozens of famous works next to each other with the same face would highlight what you are trying to say - that there really is no expression.
That said, fantastic idea and great implementation!
Your choice to create two different pieces is interesting, and I like different things about each one. The first is much more cohesive and focused. You did a great job with the color coordination, and the symbols really stand out from the background. It is not immediately obvious that it is the WiFi symbol, and I only realized that after a while. In contrast, the other piece is much more abstract- the logos are mixed together, jumbled, and smeared, and there is no clear focal point of the work. I think I like this one better, as there is more to take in over time. My favorite thing about it visually is the small patches of color in the "wrong" place, like the brown in the bottom right or the green in the top left. I think it's fine that there is no obvious meaning to the works, especially the second one which is more abstract and invites the viewer to interpret it for themself.
The outcome looks very impressive! And I especially like the word “CHOOSE” that you used to “hint at the unfortunate choice” that each American should make between the two candidates. Using different colors for the first and last three letters also strengthens the “difficulty” or “awkwardness” of the choice to be made. Documentation is pretty good and the context part provides a lot of background knowledge so that even a viewer who knows little about the election (like me) can understand the issue that you want to address. Yet, it would be better if you include the Obama “Hope” Poster and the template found online in the documentation to show the process and techniques you used more clearly.
I like how you created distinct characters through the medium of stickers on laptops. It ended up being pretty different from your original design, although that can be seen in the colors of the laptops & Apple logos, but I think what you ended up with sends an interesting message. It was fun to analyze this piece and imagine the sort of people who would use each laptop, and what they would look like, what clothes they wear, etc. This is a "societal commentary" that is actually applicable to CMU students, unlike a lot of famous art. I am not sure about the stickers you created- the "it's chill" sticker fits in with the others on that laptop, the "company swag" and "pop culture reference" could work as self-deprecating humor, but the "I went to a cool place once" does not seem to fit in with the adventurous character on the bottom right. I don't know whether you meant to criticize the personalities or to summarize them in a humorous way, but that sticker especially seems jarring and out-of-character. (On the other hand, the fact that something can seem out-of-character based on a few laptop stickers is a testament to how effective this project is.)
I like that the monetization part of the prompt got explored so thoroughly in your project! For some reason, it reminded me of the million dollar homepage a bit (http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com), although it's definitely much less of an eyesore. I think it would actually fit in at an art gallery (although I am far from an art critic). It would be amusing to see that at a gallery, pull out your phone, and be directed to some Buzzfeed "What kind of donut are you" quiz.
The sharp contrast between black and white makes the work look very clean and digital. I think that if you ever wanted to perfect this piece, cleaning up the edges would make it look more professional, but I love the feel it's going for.
Creativity: The idea to raise the public’s attention toward the internet privacy issue is excellent. And I think your work not only echoes with the title (eyes ---“watching”), but also expresses the message that you want to convey clearly by using the interfaces of those cloud storage platform, social networks and search engines.
Context &Execution: according to the documentation, you intended to create works that make viewers feel overpowered as those by Ai Weiwei. In my opinion, the “creepy and attentive” eyes from your friend do create a very provocative effect and the outcome is great!
Documentation: The documentation is overall very detailed and I appreciate your mentioning the Prisma App (I will probably give it a try for later projects).
This is an excellent work! Yet, the “eyes” currently used in your work seem to get scared by the viewers instead of watching them; so, maybe directly borrow the powerful eyes in the “Big Brother is Watching You” poster will lead to a better effect of serveillance.
I love the style of this piece! I think that it definitely uses elements of Banksy's work to make its own point. My one concern would be that the logo on the left disrupts the simplicity of the work (the bird is brown and I'm personally a fan of monochromatic palettes), but that's more of a personal preference. I like the dripping effect on "blood". It reminds me of those halloween bloody letter effects, but in a way that I think really fits street art. Graffiti gets to look a bit tacky.
I think you express very well in this project what you want to say. The big, almost terrifying eyes made me really uncomfortable, so I felt like I'm experiencing the actual surveillance when I look at your artwork. I remember reading off some books saying that an artwork is successful when people are willing to spend three minutes just staring at it. I think you definitely did it! Well done! :D
Your project is amazing!!!! I really like your idea of transforming 2D visual illusions into 3D context. I'm also very impressed by the amount of time you spent on this, as you said, up to 3 hours each piece. Your work seems PERFECT to me, and I just think I should let you know that I really love it! Wonderful job! I hope you can talk more about how you came up with this idea tomorrow in class :D
Your painting is visually informative and impressive, and at the first glance I can feel the victim’s despair and the bully’s ruthlessness. The dark tone and pieces of other art works you overlaid together enriched and reinforced the message you tried to convey. Moreover, your anecdote with Garageband as an inspiration source for the work is very interesting! Great job!!!
Personally, I'm disgusted by what has happened with this election. Your work captures that disgust and, in my opinion, looks like an "Honest Trailer" of sorts. I like what you've done here and cannot wait to see what else you come up with as the semester progresses.
I'm impressed. This made me tense as it progressed, particularly with the sinusoidal sounds that you incorporated (though the high-pitched one was a bit too harsh, I thought my tinnitus was acting up again). I had this tense feeling as it went on, and then a sudden rush of adrenaline as the crowd roared at the end. I'd say that, other than the harshness of the high-pitched sine waves you added, the work itself turned out great. As Di said, I would go into a little more detail in the documentation, as audio is a little less familiar among the people compared to visual work.
Hi! Your project is very impressive and thought-provoking. The feeling of being stared at really gives me a creepy sense of panic. I have been told how my private information becomes transparent online and how this could lead to security problems, but none of those warnings is as effective as your work. I really appreciate the way you appropriate familiar websites and social apps as they are without modifying them, since they closely relate the audience to their real life experience.
I also went to the Andy Warhol Museum, and saw Ai Weiwei’s work, Study of Perspective. So I strongly suggested that you increase the quantity of your screenshots, and if possible, create a VR version of your work and popularize it to more people.
Overall, amazing work! Thank you for effectively bringing up the security issue concerning the Internet again!
I really like your idea of further simplifying designs already pretty simple and elegant. Especially you transform 3D scenes into 2D prints, which look very artful and reinforcing the core idea of Scandinavian design. Great job!!!
Hi Sky! I really like your idea and how you put it into practice by remixing The King's Museum with those Poke-zombies. Both the Tim Burton’s quirky, satiric style, and Rene Magritte’s witty and thought-provoking work are perfect choices for your theme, and you arranged these Poke-zombies so well in the painting. For example, you put the Luvdisc in the position of the person’s heart, and used Golbat as a mask. All these details help me understand your thoughts and reflections on this feverish game.
I noticed that in the Critique you wanted to improve your work by analyzing what each individual Pokémon can mean to the resulting artwork. I would suggest that you look into the prototypes of these Pokémons and maybe they will inspire you. I also feel that the term “Augmented Reality” you mentioned is a very good focus, since AR is a new idea in game area, and it probably will occupy the market for years in the future. So maybe emphasizing on AR can also help you target a larger group of audience. (though it is already an amazing work!).
Overall, your work is interesting and thought-provoking. Thank you very much for giving me such a great experience!
I really like what you chose to do with this project. It definitely is a very interesting idea since although they are not usually seen that way, children's cartoon characters could definitely be propaganda since children are very impressionable and influenced greatly by what they see on TV or other types of media. I like that you chose to appropriate from Shepard Fairey since he had a very similar piece, and I think you did a great job converting your idea and message into that visual style. Great job!
I really liked this project for multiple reasons. First, of course, is the content and the premise. It is a very thought provoking idea that you are exploring because it is true, this generation is different in that everyone is living a virtual life that is available openly. Second, your composition really drew my eye. The powerful imagery works well with your message, and I feel like this was overall a great project.
Very interesting, the way you had the idea because you felt bullied by Garageband when it wouldn't work for your original idea. The end product of this project is visually very interesting to look at. There are a lot of colors with contrast to the dark background and it makes for a nice image overall. There may be a few hiccups because there are harsh angles between the images in each figure (maybe that was intentional). I am not very familiar with photoshop but if it were possible I would have tried to blend the faces together. Nevertheless I really like how it turned out!
I am very impressed by the way you created this street art piece. The composition is very much like the style of Banksy and it carries a message to the public. I can imagine it is difficult to recreate the natural effect of spray paint on a brick/concrete wall, but it seems to have held up to that challenge. I appreciate your view on the NRA and the abuse of "blood money" and it definitely opened my eyes to the issue. I also am very intrigued by the fact that you rejected your first attempt because it did not convey the message you were trying to deliver.
Hi! Sorry for the late comment!
Your previous recreation is straightforward in its approach but very deep and thought-provoking in its outcome and implication.
And I love the part you talked about "imperfection" and "human touch" in arts in the previous project. I think it would be very exciting to explore more on that in this creative project and possibly link that to the reason why you can make money from it.
Though I am not sure whether the "vignettes" that you are describing is the one I am thinking, the concept is really interesting!!
Hi! Sorry for the late comment.
I think your proposal illustrates the idea of "appropriation" really well. And I love how you focused on one specific aspect of the design of apple products and tried to merge it into daily life.
In terms of intention, I feel your documentation does include the idea but needs more clarification. You mentioned how design renews our impression of technology/electronics and also how simplicity of design refreshes our view of daily objects (other than electronics). Which one is your main focus? And why do you consider it is an attempt that you can make money from?
Also, I am interested in the project title "Iverything". What does that imply? Can you elaborate more explicitly on that in the documentation?
Look forward to the final product :)
This is a really interesting idea, especially since this is the election year and everybody pays more attention to politics. Also, the money side of politics is very intriguing and noteworthy. It would be better if you can provide more specific documentations about this project and how you can make money with it.
I really like the idea of doing fan art of League since I am a summoner myself, and I know how you feel connected to the champions. It seems like a good idea to try to put the champions in a college setting since many summoners are college students. You can use CMU as a reference and generalize the project a bit more to actually "make money."
By "in meme form," I mean making use of well-known characters' catch-phrases or major actions to outline irony or make a witty observation in order to bring a bit of humor to the political analysis.
I like your idea of combining classic art and modern game characters. What do you mean by "in meme form?"
Hi guys, I talked to tianjunm somewhere else so I didn't reply to his comment up there, sorry for the confusion. I am pretty passionate about Pokemon Go, and so are many of my friends, so don't worry! I'm definitely not going to criticize something people like so much about, let along insult them. The reason I chose zombie-styled Pokemon art is because I like the art a lot( I know it might not be the best reason,) but it is true that I want to communicate the message that people are overlooking important things while they are focusing on the game. I just want to give people a different way to look at this Pokezombie phenomenon. The word "zombie" isn't going have an insulting notation in my work, instead it's kind of both cute and creepy. I haven't thought of a slogan, but most likely I'm going to let the viewers decide on what my art work means to them. Thanks for your comments, I have found them very helpful! XD
I love the approach you're taking with the piece - using the progressive distortion/color removal definitely has a strong impact when executed well. I also like that you are tackling environmental issues and using the, i suppose, cleaner style of Warhol such that when you distort the picture, the effect is that much heavier.
That being said, I do agree with parts of Natalie's suggestion, and it would be interesting if you had the increasing distortion of the earth also be paralleled by shrinking ice caps and rising sea levels and desertification of more temperate regions.
I really like the theme and style of this proposal, and it's especially prevalent right now with Pokemon Go so widespread. I kind of have the same question as the other two; the sketches look almost friendly and cute, but they're also zombies, so there might be some sort of message conflict here. It would be interesting if the message was mixed, but it depends on what you want to get across.
However, your idea is pretty original, and the way you emulated Burton and created something that is relevant today is really exciting, and I'm excited to see your final project.
This is interesting because I also heavily invest in skincare products. I really like the modern/classical juxtaposition idea that you had, making your own sort of style but also giving a nod to the classical artworks. In addition, I think it's particularly interesting, because classical artwork often features perfect looking skin and lighting, but life, in reality, is not like that. Maybe you could do something that looks like a typical commercial, but instead of using a model, use a classical painting or something, to really hammer home some sort of commercialism message/criticism on classical art message type. And maybe you should focus on just one or two different panels, instead of having a lot of different panels to draw the attention away from the focus of the project. Just some ideas :)
You've made a good choice of style and theme for your proposal.
While the concept seems interesting, and Tim Burton's style is ideal for portraying the 'harmless undead' archetype, I do feel the need to ask what your driving message is - for example, is this an awareness piece, or is it targeted at 'zombie players' of Pokemon Go whom you have designated as being mindlessly obsessed? That is, is the sole goal to bash something that people find entertaining? Because there are a lot of people who are obsessed and passionate about Pokemon and Pokemon Go, and if the sole goal of the piece is to insult them, then that's not a goal that I can respect. If, however, you're offering a critique on new trends and are trying to point out flaws in how people approach the game, I suppose that'd be a healthier approach.
I like the idea of combining environmental issues with your artwork, and how you are doing it in a Warhol way, but it might be too broad to be done in a few piece. Maybe it is better with a concentration, some thing that can be focused on, like desertification...(just personal suggestions!) Also, maybe change something more than just color? changing the earth itself may speak louder than just changing the color.
Apple design is more than just technology, it is also about how to be catchy and still fancy even after a long time. Simplicity is not always the goal of life, but being simple and elegant at the same time is something many artist has been trying to follow. I like the idea of combining tech design with daily life. Also, I think the other attraction of Apple is the many powerful functions that is hidden by the simple design, and maybe this should also be considered when doing the project.
It's cool to blend traditional painting with modern cartoons to see the collision between serenity and vigor, btw the sample is really cute:)
As a person who's really found of eating and really cares about quality of meal, I'm really interested in your topic and how you are gonna discuss this under Andy Warhol's style. In your proposal you presented that you will use Warhol's contrasting color, which I consider is a very creative approach. Can't wait to see ur work:)
In the image you linked, the iconic yellow school bus (for the most part) is a symbol of equal opportunity. In towns, it stops by everybody's house, halts traffic equally stubbornly for each child to safely be able to board, and the same greeting from the bus driver. At the same time, once aboard, the same yellow school bus is a symbol of division, of exclusive groups who claim hierarchically ranked seats of the bus based on their social rankings. It introduces the two sided issue of apparent equality accompanied by long-standing inequality. I think it's a great starting point for your project. This awareness campaign can go in a number of directions.
I'm intrigued in your approach towards tackling childhood obesity in America through an artistic process, and I think you focused on tackling the issue through the most effective way - the marketing. The consumer mindset towards foods to purchase is very likely influenced by marketing, which concerns itself with underlying messages, and that's where your art project can be most effective. Especially because this project involves borrowing and stealing, you should be very specific about which aspects you incorporate because consumers will likely already have associated attitudes towards those components.
I am very interested about your idea to make art out of skincare products. Since skincare is one of the heart of commercialism I think your product will fully respond to the modern consumerism. It might be a good idea to actually show the skincare product in your small pieces of art to show that the pictures are actually drawn by them. Using what already exists will be an extension from readymade move but in this case I think it would be an assisted readymade type of art. Hope to see your final product soon;)
I really like the notion of telling a story using the form of art. The two picture you came up with greatly inspired me. You seem to have a clear intentions and know how to express what you are willing to tell people. However as a project that seeks for monetary benefit, I am not sure if the art you are planning fits the criteria. At the same time, you might want to explore more on anti-patriotic pictures which are drawn in a similar way with satire. Hope to see your art soon:)
It's a good start. You reconsidered the moments when you got aroused by artworks and thought about their connection with brands. Sometimes it's just the attraction from certain product that stimulates the willingness of consumers to purchase certain product, and I believe artworks themselves have the power in doing so, and the process through which they can be exploited is for you to explore. I don't think you finished your work, so please complete the rest of the documentation.
It's very interesting that you identified the connection between people's obsession with Pokemon Go with the figure of zombie - mindless and purposeless. Tim Burton's style, especially, is a very suitable media for combining comic figures with zombie theme. Very nice discovery and thoughtful mingle of existing arts. But one problem is the theme of this product: is it going to criticize the people who are playing Pokemon GO? Or is it just a friendly, kind reflection of a common phenomenon? How is it going to cater to consumers' needs?
This seems like a unique and pragmatic approach to making money from the artwork. That is, instead of selling the art, you are using it to attract (with its beautiful). It seems like you have the money making logistics down. You also list a few influences for your work, so I guess you can say you are imitating/stealing/borrowing their style. You seem to value the atmosphere of the experience that customers are getting, so maybe make that part of the artwork as well by choosing very specific street side places to vend from.
The idea is innovative. It intends to not only present common food in a creative, artistic way, but also explore a more profound meaning in the field---an act that leads viewers into a more insightful understanding of food. Bur for me, it is really hard to decide the composition and subjects in the painting. Therefore, I really look forward to seeing your work and hope to get inspiration from it.
I think oadebayo has some good advice. I'm very interested to see the specifics of what you work will have because this is something that artists have been going at for a while now it seems. A possible route you could take would be to educate somehow instead of mainly drawing attention to the problem. I think most people know they're doing their body wrong by eating improperly but it's very hard for them to help themselves without more knowledge or a pathway to that knowledge. Just a suggestion.
This is a really cool idea! Mashing is a classic appropriation method. Especially video games, which are iconic in the modern age, go very well with older pieces. Excited to see what exactly you're going to come up with.
I think you have a good idea of the style of your appropriation. However, it's unclear to me what exactly you're envisioning for your artwork in terms of 'relating to technology'. What are you imagining for the art that is going along with the text? I like that you found your theme, but I'm excited to see how you're going to bring that theme to life.
Gender issue is one of the most important matters people should deal with nowadays. Some people are neglecting the seriousness of gender inequality while some people are having a morbid attitude towards it. Thus it is really a great idea to raise people's awareness regarding gender issue. The work will be really valuable. Obviously, Kruger has a distinctive style of combining words and images. Therefore it is necessary to reach a balance between words and images in the picture to ensure that your message is delivered clearly. It is a hard job, but I am really excited to see how you could make a powerful artwork :)
Hi Min,
Love the idea; I'm sure it'll end up being really nice! My suggestion is that you draw the characters instead of simply photoshopping them. It'll have more of a "fanart" kind of feel, and fanart can sell for a lot of money :) For example you could draw two characters emulating the Pietà, or reference other famous poses and figures.
Hi,
I like the concept and I think it's definitely something that we don't see very much today. Usually nowadays children's characters might be used in advertisements to get kids to buy things, but they are not seen so much in propaganda. Also considering we are not really in wartime anymore, I'm curious to see what kind of propaganda (maybe political?) you will be working with, as well as which characters you will choose.
I like the idea of satirizing the growth of advertisements in news media. However, I have concerns as to your monetization method. Of course, the advertisements themselves will help fund the site, but most ad services (google especially) are cognizant of the negative effect of a "wall of ads" (at least from an advertiser's perspective). With this in mind you may not get the monetary return you are thinking of. Also, the amount of money from each ad view is quite small (I believe the figure is something like $1000 per million views - maybe even less). Because of this you will need to somehow make the project viral - even though this is obviously outside of the scope of this project, I would appreciate seeing some sort of plan with regards to how you plan on convincing people into viewing a wall of advertisements.
I saw your previous project, and indeed it captured the illusion of motion seen in Fall. Really curious to see how the vignettes will be animated; already the eyes input a lot of perceived motion. Unfortunately I was not able to play the video, but will definitely install the player to see the result of this one. And I'm curious as to how animation would improve on this.
Just a small thinking out loud thing, and really a small consideration, but it might be interesting to think about how to transition between the vignettes and how those transitions may contribute to the expression of the pieces.
Wonderful idea, and really curious as to how the project would be styled. The only thing I think you should consider is how to lay out the project, especially with how you plan to lay out the lines designed to create that "off" feeling. Thinking mostly out loud, but if you lined the panels into one single line instead of a rectangle, as well as making the line slant subtle, the message you would want to get across would possibly be stronger, as at the moment in the sketch the slanted lines are defined enough that it feels more like a perspective image than something similar to an application of feeling off balance, and having it arranged in a rectangle also seems to break the progression a little, as by the end of the first line my eye can already get good detail of the final panel.
I like the idea of mashing video games and traditional art forms - it is a bansky-esque reappropriation of popular culture into a foreign context. One concern that I have is copyright: nintendo especially is very protective of their intellectual property and is not very receptive to commercialized fan art and the like. With this in mind I am concerned as to the commercial viability of the project. Perhaps you might want to consider using other IP from companies that are allowing of commercial fan adaptations.
I like the satire in your idea. It's often easy to dig deep into a seemingly-simple but very open-ended project, while at the same time criticizing the superficiality of commercials and advertisements, so I'm really excited to see the blending of the two different styles. Depending on how you overlay the pictures, it might be sort of confusing since Rothko's works are so simple and can easily be overlooked, so perhaps a more blended merging of the two works would better help you achieve your goal. I'm really excited to see this completed!
This sounds like a really cool idea! I liked how you combined both practical and artistic function. It will be interesting to see how the contrasting colors turn out on something that we commonly view as only one or two colors. I feel like your "live to eat or eat to live" debate also opens up the topic of commercializing food or something of that nature.
Wow I really think your idea is a creative and brave one! While pretty interested in listening to your project myself, I think it would be great to give a thorough, even lengthy description of what exactly you are doing. People might not be as familiar to audio projects as visual ones.
I like your idea of mixing the development of technology with readymades, and/or other art forms. Your proposal makes it pretty clear what your intention is. I would advise that when you photograph everyday things and give it the name of an existing art, make sure that what you are drawing or photographing actually has a theme similar to the original art piece.
Hi Laura! I think your topic is meaningful to many, and I really appreciate the way you point out the defects of modern day advertisements like how they can be misleading. Though it might take time to research on mental disorders, which is quite a deep topic, I think it would be amazing if you really manage to reflect the nuances among people with mental disorders. That would help people form the appropriate value towards this topic. I cannot wait to see your work!
Although I personally don’t care much about politics, I like your idea about using slogans to show "the absurdity of the politics within this year’s election". It seems that Political slogans usually make use of exaggerated term or tone to achieve their purpose ----attracting more support and votes. Therefore, I believe that your proposal is convincing and practical and I’m looking forward to your finished work!
I think your idea is creative and impressive, and I like the way you find your inspirations from these two works. Your description of the project is clear and detailed, but I want to see how you will incorporate the concept of "nationalism" in your work. For example, how are you going to present the wounded person? Does this person reveal any emotions? Besides "nationalism", are you also considering "against the war" as your topic? I am really curious about these questions.
Also, as "nationalism" might be a very serious topic, how are you going to make money out of it?
Look forward to seeing your project!
I like your idea about overlaying flashy and tacky advertisements on Rothoko’s works. As Rothko’s works are usually composed of huge pure-color rectangles, they seem somewhat vacuous on the first look. That’s why I think adding those “meaningful” advertisements to the artwork will create strong contrast, which may also indirectly reflect or satirize utilitarianism in that they won’t leave any “useful” places blank. Explanations about the actual way to make money are very cute :) Yet, I did not see the point that you want to make via the artwork written in the proposal; so maybe you’d like to think about that. By the way, I’m looking forward to your final work from the modified picture at bottom, but I would suggest not covering the whole rectangle; otherwise, it won’t be easy for people to recognize the background as Rothko’s work.
I like that you're very specific on what you're going to do, and what goal you want to achieve through this creative project. Personally, I'd like to see how the second option turns out. While the first choice is certainly a very interesting idea, I think the one with instagram would attract much more viewers and attention, given that most people have more exposure to social media than Andy Warhol's work. I really look forward to your work!
I think it's a good idea to start a creative project based on your interest and what you've been thinking about for a long time. The more you feel really "connected" to the theme, it'll be easier and you would come up with interesting insights that others couldn't have thought about. However, from your explanation, I couldn't figure out how you're going to use the game characters, or what you're going to do with it. Still, if you'd be more specific on this, I think it's going to be a pretty interesting work!
I really like this proposal! The statement is solid and I really like how you worked in the repetitive style of Warhol into your project,. Your idea with playing with perception is really cool too and I'm interested to see how it'll play out. Something else to think about, is maybe along with having the eye slowly show up, it could start closed and slowly open up as well. And on the last panel the eye could be open as well as focused so kind of go along with the title of the piece. But overall this is a solid proposal. Good luck!
I would make money from the actual ads (I guess using Google Adsense or something similar). Thanks for the feedback.
I think your idea is very thoughtful, but a little confusing at the same time. It is ironic to put commercials and brand logos on such a calm painting, and your prediction that people stop thinking deep after they've seen the logos is very accurate. It's probably because of my lack of imagination that I don't really get what you want your final product to look like. Also I feel that maybe the logos and commercials can build some sort of connection with the painting? Nice job! Hope my advice helps! :)
I think the concept is interesting, except I am a bit confused on the overall message of your art. Are you attempting to show the dangers of aiming messages at children?
I think you can make great use of pop art to help create your art!
I really like both the statement you're making and your approach. This is definitely an issue that has faced the U.S. for many years and your approach really looks at it in an interesting way. I like the revealing nature of it because it highlights the fact that the fast food industry is trying hide something. One suggestion I have is that, beyond just considering obesity caused by the fast food industry, you could also delve into the effects on different body parts as well, such as clogged arteries, heart failure, etc. to broaden the statement a bit. I was thinking maybe using the same image as in the fast food ads but showing what's actually happening on the inside like an x-ray. But regardless of what you go with, I'm definitely interested to see the outcome. Good luck!
Interesting idea! I believe that pop art style food has the potential to be very intriguing. One thing that comes to mind when I read your proposal was the movie "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs". In the film or books, food is taken to mimic scenery, so it may help you with ideas.
One other thing is that it seems your theme touches on the idea that appearance often times creates our judgement on things. Maybe you can touch on that on an overall level, by using food as the example
I think it's a wonderful idea to illustrate the diversity in this college by making this picture with 9 different modified Apple logos and accessories. Just for clarification, are you going to create all 9 pieces by yourself? Or are they going to be photos of other people's laptops and phone cases? I like that you plan to use colorful contrasts just like Andy Warhol did, and I really think it is going to be an eye-catching art piece! I'm looking forward to seeing your final product! :))
I like the idea that you're exploring. A lot of what we see and hear as children affect our lives as adults and its disturbing to think that some children were fed propaganda. I'm interested to see what characters you'll pick to illustrate this. Are you intending to go with a more vintage look or create something to market to today's children?
Everyone wears a mask, or even multiple masks under different contexts, and thus I believe your final product will be very appealing to all groups of audience. And I think it's very appropriate that you're borrowing the idea and methods of illustration of "The Son of Man" to show your point, since the artist is also trying to convey a sense of secrecy and self-protection in the artwork, as you mentioned. Furthermore, regarding the specific way you're intending to approach your idea, changing the background and working on facial expressions to create contrasts/visual effects is a good direction to follow in my opinion. I look forward to see your final product.
I think a lot of people will definitely relate to this project you have in mind, since all of us has more or less mental disorders, maybe very nuanced, and personal problems/distress, that other people can't exactly relate to and we deal with on our own. Thus, I like your idea of challenging modern commercialized images that oversimplify the issue of mental disorders. I think it's very challenging that you're trying to shed light onto and present that mental disorders are nuanced, and I'm excited to see your final project!
I feel like your current outline is too simplistic. As far as I can see, you want to reproduce the style of Apple just because it looks good. Is there any other reason you would take inspiration? Is there a deeper message you can possibly convey?
I like this idea a lot! I really feel for the point you are trying to carry across. I feel like cartoons is a great way to express the message towards the LGBT+ community. In particular, there aren't enough explanations of LGBT+ aimed at children. I think you can make this into a very interesting project.
It's an interesting idea, though it may be difficult to execute well. Many logos use similar colors due to the emotional reactions certain colors elicit. Just look at how many social media sites have a blue background on their logo with a white icon: Facebook, twitter, tumblr, skype, the list goes on. It may be difficult to make a piece that is both abstract and identifiable, but if you succeed, the result can be fun and memorable. Good luck!
I think this is a really great idea! I have many friends in the LGBT+ community, and a fair amount of them are either too scared to come out or unhappy with not being straight or looked down upon by family or society because of it. Introducing the concept of romantic orientations early could be a huge step in stopping the association of being LGBT+ with abnormality. Anything to bring awareness of the purity that can come with a same-sex relationship is very welcome. My only advice would be to make sure that the majority of the images you use cannot be dismissed quickly by claims that the subjects are simply 'very close friends' and that the apparent gender of the characters is not ambiguous.
I think your idea is very creative, and I like that you have a clear message that you want to communicate. I also really like the way you will be using someone else's artwork, and adding small details to symbolize very different ideas than what might be interpreted from the original work. It is clear that you will be using the painting in your project, and will also be taking the logos of various schools. Are these the only things you will take? And is this the only painting you will modify? How would you approach selling your recreation, and to whom?
I think your proposal sounds great! I like that you are getting inspiration from someone whose work is significant to you, and I am interested to see how you will present your own messages in a similar style. I think it might also be interesting to make your project unique in a clear way, either by communicating messages that are different from Barbara's, or by using different types of images that are presented in her same style. You also made it clear how you will be taking images from other people, and also copying the style of Barbara Kruger. Do you think you would be able to sell these works? The success of Kruger's works may be a good indicator of this!
A very interesting idea! I believe that everyone wears a mask, and it is intriguing to think about who people are under such masks. I feel like you intend to make something that will confront people and make them reconsider who really are, what they hide, and why they hide. The original artwork is very thought provoking as it is, and I am glad you are trying to instill an even bigger interactive component into your work. I am excited to see the product!
You are working with a very thought-provoking idea here. It is the kind of question that people do not like facing, and I feel like there is a lot of room for you to explore. Of course, it is very much like the issues Andy Warhol worked with in his career, so I am glad you will be using his illustration technique; it seems very appropriate. At first, I considered doing a project around similar ideas but then changed my mind, so I am excited to see what you produce!
Hi Claire,
I think your proposals pretty clear on the approach to 'stealing' that you're going to take. You're borrowing the style and methods found in John Baldessari's work to create your composition. Having your style/approach defined is great and puts you in a strong place.
But it's not clear what content you're going to work with. What text and images do you plan to work with and why? Narrow the type of content you want to work with - is there a theme? How do you find this content - is there a method to collecting it: following a hashtag on Twitter, browsing a particular forum?
In short, the content, the material is what will make the outcome interesting. I'd spend some time trying to zone in on what media you really want work with. Spend time developing this aspect for next Thursday!
P.S. How are you addressing the second component of the brief: How do you think this could make money? Why?
Hi JJ,
Your proposal is really clear where you're drawing inspiration from and what materials/content you're goign to work with. One thing that could be more clear is the second part of the brief: How do you think this could make money? Why?
The idea of how abstract and minimal can you make a logo is a great question to ask - and you can push it really far. I'd immediately start experimenting - what aspects of brands do you want to push to abstract absurdities: forms (shapes in the logos), colors or type?
Things to think about:
- Look at Design Experiments like this study in Brand Minimalism - http://www.thedieline.com/blog/2011/11/10/a-study-in-brand-minimalism.html. You might check out sources like Behance to see how designers evolve brands
- How does this relate to the progression of brands over the past 100 years. Apple, Starbucks, etc have all pushed their logos to simpler and simpler (and more recognizable) variations - http://adage.com/article/small-agency-diary/starbucks-logo-marketers-learning-quiet/148060/
- McDonalds went super minimal to create a sense of luxury in their brand. How does your work relate to this capitalistic aspect of minimising brand - https://appnovaweb.wordpress.com/2013/08/06/is-mcdonalds-trying-to-become-a-luxury-brand-capitalism-minimalism-decadence-and-french-fries/
Hi Laura,
I think you've stumbled on a really interesting material to work with. The content of medical adverts is rich with visual and written content that you can rework and make into a compelling outcome e.g. the warnings, the words, the visual imagery/illustrations used to show signs of illness, etc.
Worry less on making an immediate statement and experiment with the ways you can rework and treat the adverts themselves into new forms. The statement should emerge when you get the approach to the content right.
You might draw inspiration from the practices found in Détournement. There's a number of artists who use adverts as their primary materials, for example The Billboard Liberation Front. http://www.billboardliberation.com/manifesto.html, http://www.bombingscience.com/billboard-liberation-front/

Great product! I think it fully represents exactly what your intentions were. The style matches the Mona Lisa very well. I also like your choice of character. Your documentation is also well written too. Good job.
